LEARN TO ROW AT BIAC

Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC) invites you to join us on the water! Register now for one of our spring or summer Learn to Row classes. Our classes offer an exceptional opportunity for people of all abilities to experience this beautiful and traditional sport in a friendly, supportive environment. Rowing is a wonderful form of low-impact exercise. Classes are held in the waters surrounding Bair Island, the largest remaining restorable wetlands in the South San Francisco Bay.

Learn to Row classes meet Saturdays and Sundays for three hours for two consecutive weekends. Classes meet at BIAC in Redwood City (location). The course fee is $250 and includes one month of coaching in our novice crew as well as a three-month BIAC trial membership.

Membership in BIAC includes access to our ergometers (rowing machines), free introduction to sculling lessons, and use of our single person sculling boats.

There are no prerequisites for the class, other than the ability to swim 100 meters. Rowers will learn sweep rowing (one oar per person) in 4- and 8-person shells (boats). You will spend some time on land, getting familiar with the boats and learning the basic stroke on ergometers. After the first day, most of the time will be spent in a boat and out on the water.

Wear comfortable and close-fitting workout clothing. Bicycling gear is great for rowing. Loose or baggy clothing can get caught in the sliding seat or an oar handle. In colder weather, wear layers. Shoes should provide good traction and be able to get wet. However, they will be left on the dock while rowing.

Other articles to bring include a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and drinking water.

After the Learn to Row class, you will join our novice crew of graduates from our Learn to Row classes. The novice crew, like our more advanced crews, meets year-round, and continues to receive basic instruction in rowing. Most of the rowing is in 4 and 8 person "sweep" boats, although some time is spent in single or multiple person "sculling" boats (two oars per person). The crew prepares for informal scrimmages with novices from other clubs, as well as for local regattas which have special categories for masters novice rowers. We also encourage you to take our free introduction to sculling lessons in single person boats soon after you complete the Learn to Row class.

For more information on our novice crew, see the rowing programs page.
